Charles Patrick McCabe

Patrick McCabe, a native and lifelong resident of Pomeroy, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Memory Manor Long Term Care Center in Pomeroy from causes related to age.

Born Charles Patrick McCabe on June 29, 1913, to C. Alex McCabe, also a native of Pomeroy, and Ann Marie Mock McCabe, who was born in Columbia County, Wash., he received his primary education at Holy Rosary Parish School and graduated from Pomeroy High School. He received his undergraduate degree in 1935 and his law degree from Gonzaga University in 1937.

After passing the bar examination, he entered into a partnership with his father at Pomeroy on Sept. 1, 1937. He continued in that practice until he was elected in 1968 to the Superior Court judgeship for Asotin, Columbia and Garfield counties. He continued as judge from Jan. 1, 1969, until his retirement in 1983, hearing his last jury case in December 1983. During his retirement, he continued hearing matters in Superior Court and in District Court as court commissioner and judge pro tem. During his active years, he sat as a judge pro tem on both the Washington Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

He and Marjorie Williams were married at Spokane on Aug. 16, 1939. To that marriage, four daughters were born. Marjorie died Dec. 24, 1996.

He served as either prosecuting attorney or deputy and acting prosecuting attorney for Garfield County for 26 years, including time spent in the military service. He was elected as president of the Washington State Prosecuting Attorney's Association for the 1968-69 term, a position he resigned upon becoming judge on Jan. 1, 1969.

He served in the United States Navy as a communications watch officer in the Pacific area on the staff of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, entering the service in October 1942 and serving in reserve status after October 1945.

He was active in civic and public affairs all during his professional life. He was a Boy Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle and he served as a Scoutmaster for five years prior to World War II. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Pomeroy Kiwanis Club, the Lewiston Elk Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Catholic Parish, serving the parish one term as a member of the parish council.

He is survived by four daughters, Jennifer Carrasco of Seattle, Megan Hood of Pomeroy, Brigid Parker of Gig Harbor, Wash., and her twin sister, Eileen Henry of Pomeroy; three brothers, Robert A. McCabe, USMC Ret. of Seattle, James C. McCabe of Pomeroy and Bert M. McCabe of LaConner, Wash; one sister, Kathleen Vassar of Lewiston; four grandsons, Josh and Jon Hood of Denver, Colo., John Robert Henry of Kent, Wash., and Carlos Carrasco of Orlando, Fla.; one granddaughter, Jessica Erin Henry of Cheney, Wash.; one great-grandson, Liam McCabe Carrasco of Orlando; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Holy Rosary Church in Pomeroy. The funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. John Sand at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. A private family burial will follow at a later date.

Harold Henry Breithaupt

Harold Henry Breithaupt, retired railroad worker, farm laborer and country preacher, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Memory Manor in Pomeroy. He was 89.

He was born July 17, 1912, to Henry M. and Ethel Burns Breithaupt in Mondovi, Washington. He grew up in Richland and St. John, and attended public school at St. John. He graduated from the Northwest Bible Institute in Seattle in 1944.

Harold lived in Seattle, Suquamish, Ewan, Hay and Colfax. He married Roberta A. Diener on July 20, 1942, in the Pleasant View Baptist Church in Post Falls, Idaho. He was a country preacher and later a railroad and farm worker. They moved to Pomeroy in 1957 to raise their children.

Harold was an active gardener and hymn singer. His family will remember him as industrious, economical, diligent, resourceful, faithful and helpful. His hobbies included bee keeping, fishing, reading and singing. He was a member of the Pomeroy Assembly of God Church.

His survivors include his wife at their home in Pomeroy; five sons, Paul Harold Breithaupt of Rock Hill, S.C., Philip David Breithaupt of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Daniel Joseph Breithaupt of Okanagan, Wash., Reuben Benjamin Breithaupt of Pomeroy and Stephen Samuel Breithaupt of Japan; four daughters, Elisabeth Esther Ward of Prescott, Ariz., Rebekah Ruth Titus of Springfield, Mo., Hannah Mary Cozski of Palos Hills, Ill., and Evangeline Roberta Workman of Pomeroy; a brother, Duncan T. Breithaupt of Dayton, Wash.; a sister, Evelyn McPherson of College Place, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah; sister, Esther Finney; twin brother, Howard Breithaupt, and brothers, Cecil, Charles, Robert, Virgil, Martin and Marion Breithaupt.

The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pomeroy Nazarene Church with the Revs. John Vantrease of Pomeroy Assembly of God Church and Philip D. Breithaupt of the Assembly of God Church officiating.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Northwest Bible College at Kirkland, Wash., in care of Pomeroy Assembly of God Church.
